Songs for Soldiers

I have been writing songs for a few years, and recently came across an article about two soldiers (husband and wife), who are trying to put together an album for soldiers by soldiers, sang and recorded by professional musicians. Please check out their web site in the link above. Here is one of my songs which I have submitted.

Soldier's Note (When the Flowers Bloom)

There was a night late September
Driving my Semi trailer heading West
In the back there was a coffin
A soldier coming home to rest

They gave me a bag of his belongings
For me to carry on that night
From that bag fell out a letter
This is what that soldier wrote

Lay me down beneath the soil
Of that place where I was born
Plant a dogwood by my graveside
Remember me when the flowers bloom

Tell my wife how much I love her
Wipe the tears from her eyes
Tell my children stories of their father
Make them laugh and make them smile

Tell them that when they feel lonely
To go outside and watch the stars
I’ll be the one shining brightly
To that warm place within their hearts

Lay me down beneath the soil
Of that place where I was born
Plant a dogwood by my graveside
Remember me when the flowers bloom

We laid him down in that mountain soil
Of that place he called home
We said a prayer and planted a dogwood
And remembered him when the flowers bloomed
